Smaller or Stronger? The Truth About Aging You Need to Know!

Smaller or Stronger? The Truth About Aging You Need to Know!

Is it better to be smaller or stronger as you age? After three years on a GLP-1 drug, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George has landed on an answer that changes how she thinks about the scale: strength is our retirement plan — and muscle loss, not weight, is the number that matters most.

The science: lean mass is NOT the same as muscle (it includes water and organs — even your DEXA scan or body-composition band blends them), and every weight-loss journey takes some lean tissue with it. The silver lining is that fat drops faster than lean mass when loss is steady. And the fix is proven at scale: in real-world evidence covering 670,000 people, the ones who paired protein-focused nutrition with lifting weights lost significantly less lean mass on GLP-1 drugs. Even better — in a famous study, 80-year-olds who had never lifted weights improved their strength remarkably within weeks, with barely any change in muscle size. Strength responds at any age.

Then she gets practical from her own routine: the protein target (1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight — and how she fights to reach 100g a day on a GLP-1 appetite), eating protein first, the 2-day-a-week strength routine that needs no gym (chair sit-to-stands, wall pushups, bands, farmer's carries with a kettlebell), why she wears a weighted vest — and the over-enthusiasm mistake that left her with stiff shoulders, why pain quietly predicts muscle loss, and the $250 Bod Pod test she's booking to measure what the scale can't.

🔑 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

✦ Why "lean mass" on your scan isn't the same as muscle

✦ The GLP-1 set point: why your weight can stall while your size keeps shrinking

✦ What 670,000 people showed about protein + lifting on GLP-1 drugs

✦ The two strength tests to try today: standing on one leg, and rising from a chair without hands

✦ How much protein you actually need (1.2–1.6 g per kg) — and how MC builds to 100g a day

✦ You lose 2–3 pounds of muscle per decade — unless you're intentional

✦ The no-gym routine: sit-to-stands, wall pushups, bands, farmer's carries, 2 days a week

✦ The weighted vest: real benefits, and the overuse mistake to avoid

✦ Why pain predicts muscle loss — and what to do about it

✦ When to involve your doctor, and what a Bod Pod test can tell you
