Is There An Antidote To Stress? with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee

We’re up against a chronic epidemic: stress. In fact, it’s estimated that 80% or more of doctors’ visits are due to illnesses related to stress. This can come in many different forms. Socioeconomic stress is a real burden for many people, as is the stress of taking care of several generations within a family, or meeting the demands of our jobs. Stress can also come in the form of bad food and poor or inadequate sleep, which send negative signals to the brain that produce stress hormones. That doesn’t mean we’re stuck with stress though. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m joined by my good friend Dr. Rangan Chatterjee to look at the many sides of stress and all the actions we can take to stop it in its tracks. Dr. Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. He hosts the biggest health podcast in Europe, Feel Better, Live More, which Apple has announced as one of the most downloaded new podcasts of the past year. His first book, How to Make Disease Disappear, is an international bestseller all over the world and has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide in just 18 months. His most recent book, the #1 bestseller, The Stress Solution, tackles what the WHO calls the health epidemic of our time—stress. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Joovv. ButcherBox is currently offering listeners of the podcast 2 lbs of wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon PLUS $20 off your first box. Here are more of the details from our interview: -The personal experience that changed Dr. Chatterjee’s approach to practicing medicine (6:22) -Why Dr. Chatterjee chose to focus on the topic of stress in his latest book, The Stress Solution (15:25) -The power of identifying if there is a trigger point in your week that leads to the bulk of your stress (19:26) -How stress affects your physiology and why finding meaning and purpose in your life is so important to your stress resiliency (23:53) -Managing your mindset as it relates to what you can vs what you cannot control (36:15) -How lack of downtime contributes to stress, the brain’s default mode network, and our toxic relationship to technology (38:34) -How to create a morning routine in as little as 5 minutes (48:32) -Creating new behaviors and habits (55:34) -The daily gratitude exercise Dr. Chatterjee practices with his family (57:33) -The importance of touch and intimacy (1:00:37) Find Dr. Chatterjee online at https://drchatterjee.com/ and follow him on Facebook @DrChatterjee, on Instagram @DrChatterjee, and on Twitter @drchatterjeeuk.

How To Balance Women's Hormones With Lifestyle And Diet

How To Balance Women's Hormones With Lifestyle And Diet

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Bioptimizers, and Paleovalley.  Contrary to popular belief, women cannot follow the same health and fitness protocols as men and expect the same results. Unlike men, women in their reproductive years have specific hormonal considerations, and their rise and fall throughout the month impact everything from energy to focus, mood, metabolism, and the ability to adapt to good-for-you stressors like exercise or fasting. Meanwhile, perimenopause and menopause pose a whole other list of considerations to keep women feeling well. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Mindy Pelz and Dr. Sara Gottfried about why we need to prioritize teaching women about their hormones. Dr. Mindy Pelz is a renowned holistic health expert and one of the leading voices in educating women about their hormonal health. She has empowered hundreds of thousands of people around the world to tap into their bodies' innate healing abilities through her “5-Step Approach,” which uses fasting, personalized nutrition, stress management, chemical detoxification, and lifestyle changes to optimize health and slow the aging process. Dr. Sara Gottfried is a board-certified physician who graduated from Harvard and MIT. She practices evidence-based integrative, precision, and Functional Medicine. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University, and Director of Precision Medicine at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health. Her three New York Times bestselling books include: The Hormone Cure, The Hormone Reset Diet, and Younger. Her latest book is called Women, Food, and Hormones. Why Eating Grains Can Drive Obesity, Heart Disease, Autoimmune Issues, And More

Why Eating Grains Can Drive Obesity, Heart Disease, Autoimmune Issues, And More

This episode is brought to you by Mitopure and LMNT. For nearly all of our history, humans consumed no grains, and our bodies are designed to work very well without them. Today, however, grain-based foods are by far the number one source of calories in the American diet. While whole grains can be a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, the toxic amounts we eat contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Plus, most of the grains we eat—even whole wheat—are turned into flour products which have a higher glycemic index than table sugar. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about why grains are such a contentious food, how to tackle the pros and cons of whether it belongs in your diet, and which grains are actually okay to eat.  This episode is brought to you by Mitopure and LMNT. Support the growth of new, healthy mitochondria and get 10% off Mitopure. Head to timelinenutrition.com/drmark and use code DRMARK at checkout. Right now, LMNT is offering my listeners a free sample pack with any purchase. Head over to DrinkLMNT.com/hyman today. Here are more details from our interview (audio version / Apple Subscriber version): You don’t have to eat grains to be healthy (8:40 / 5:41) “Whole grain” is a marketing term (10:31 / 7:32) Why starch and sugar are essentially the same thing (11:22 / 8:23) You’re not eating the same grains your grandparents ate (11:58 / 8:59) Is oatmeal good for you? (21:09 / 18:10) What types of grains are okay and what should be avoided? (23:20 / 20:21) Who should avoid grains altogether? (24:59 / 22:00)

How The Ketogenic Diet Supports Metabolism, Cancer Therapy, And Mental Health

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, AG1, and Paleovalley.  While the ketogenic diet is often thought of as a diet to help people lose weight, it has a much broader application with therapeutic benefits that help to reset metabolism and restore mitochondrial function.  Researchers have found that a ketogenic diet can be a potent tool in cancer treatment as well as in neurodegenerative disorders and mental illness. In today’s episode, I talk with Mark Sisson, Dr. Sarah Hallberg, Dr. Christopher Palmer, and Dr. Patrick Hanaway about how a ketogenic diet can be used as a treatment for serious health conditions. Mark Sisson is the founder of the popular daily health blog Mark’s Daily Apple, godfather to the Primal food and lifestyle movement, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Keto Reset Diet. His latest book is Keto for Life, where he discusses how he combines the keto diet with a Primal lifestyle for optimal health and longevity. The late Dr. Sarah Hallberg was a medical director at Virta Health, a fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Health Innovator Fellowship, and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She was also the Medical Director and founder of the Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program at Indiana University Health Arnett and an adjunct professor of clinical medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Christopher Palmer is a psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For over 25 years, he has held leadership roles in psychiatric education, conducted research, and worked with people who have treatment-resistant mental illnesses. Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician and trained at Washington University. Strategies To Reverse Autoimmune Disease

Strategies To Reverse Autoimmune Disease

This episode is brought to you by Essentia and Cozy Earth. But there are many more autoimmune diseases that affect the nervous system, joints and muscles, skin, endocrine gland, and heart.
