How To Support The Next Generation Of Farmers

How To Support The Next Generation Of Farmers

How To Support The Next Generation Of Farmers | This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic The average age of a farmer in the United States today is 58 years old. And it’s been projected that about 40% of the continental United States’ farm and ranch acreage will have changed hands between 2015 and 2035. However, young people who are looking to get into farming are unfortunately faced with a number of barriers to entry, including difficulty accessing land, education, and financing. This is why it is so important that we begin to spur business innovation and create policy supports to bring in the next generation of farmers, and innovators in the food system. Dr. Hyman explored these topics in three conversations he had last year with guests Kimbal Musk, Tobias Peggs, and Danielle Nierenberg. Kimbal Musk is a chef, restaurateur, and philanthropist. His personal mission is to pursue an America where everyone has access to real food. He’s been named a Global Social Entrepreneur by the World Economic Forum and is the co-founder and Executive Chairman of three businesses—The Kitchen Restaurant Group, Big Green, and Square Roots—with real food missions that are rapidly growing across the US. The Kitchen Restaurant Group (with its three concepts Next Door, Hedge Row, and The Kitchen) serves real food at every price point and has created over a thousand mission-driven jobs. The restaurants source sustainably grown food from American farmers, stimulating the local farm economy to the tune of millions of dollars a year. Kimbal’s nonprofit organization, Big Green, builds permanent, outdoor Learning Garden classrooms in hundreds of underserved schools across America reaching over 350,000 students every day. His tech-enabled food company, Square Roots, builds urban farms in climate-controlled shipping containers with the mission to bring real food to people in cities around the world by empowering next-gen farmers. Tobias Peggs is co-founder and CEO of Square Roots, the Brooklyn-based urban farming company known for changing the way people think about growing local food and training the country’s future generations of farmers. Previously, he led Aviary, a mobile photo editing company as its CEO until its acquisition by Adobe, and was also CEO at OneRiot, a social media analytics company, acquired by Walmart. Tobias grew up in England and has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Cardiff University. Danielle Nierenberg co-founded the non-profit Food Tank in 2013 as an organization focused on building a global community for safe, healthy, nourished eaters. Prior to starting Food Tank, Danielle spent two years traveling to more than 60 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America, meeting with farmers and farmers’ groups, scientists and researchers, policymakers and government leaders, students and academics, along with journalists, documenting what’s working to help alleviate hunger and poverty, while protecting the environment at the same time. View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal Are you, or someone you know, thinking about starting a family now or in the near future? Typically, the focus on reproductive health falls on the woman, and it begins after conception has already occurred, with minimal emphasis on diet and nutrition beyond prenatal vitamins.  However, the pre-conception window is a foundational time for both partners to take charge of their hormonal, metabolic, and overall health to ensure the healthiest sperm and egg possible for a healthy pregnancy and, most importantly, a healthy baby.  In today's episode, we're discussing the essential steps both men and women can take to foster a nurturing environment for conception. We'll delve into lab tests and tools to support hormone and reproductive wellness, the challenges and insults of our modern-day lifestyles, and how we can use Functional Medicine to take a proactive approach by embracing diet, supplements, and exercise to prime couples for a successful pregnancy while safeguarding against developmental conditions like autism and ADHD that are doubling, or even tripling from one generation to the next.  Whether you're just starting to think about having kids or already on your pregnancy path, this conversation is for you.  In this episode I discuss:  The importance of the preconception window (3:15)(5:05) How epigenetics impact the preconception window (3:58)(6:01) How parent’s diet and lifestyle imprint their children’s epigenome (5:03)(6:59) Limitations of Conventional Medicine during the preconception window (9:30)(11:26) The Functional Medicine approach to preparing to conceive (12:12) Breakdown of essential nutrients and biomarkers to ensure a healthy pregnancy (15:27) Sex hormone and bonus lab tests (21:00) Optimizing blood sugar and cardiometabolic health before and during pregnancy (22:40) Foods to eat and foods to avoid while gearing up for pregnancy (23:44) Eat your foods in the correct order (protein and fat first, then carbs (36:28) Tips for reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (38:14) The power of exercise, stress, and sleep for a healthy pregnancy (47:24) Supplement recommendations for men and women for the preconception window (51:35) This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and AG1. How You've Been Lied To About Calories, Dieting, Exercise, & Losing Weight

View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal There are several different schools of thought behind obesity and metabolic dysfunction, for example, the energy balance model or “calories-in, calories-out” perspective that many people have felt fooled by. While calories certainly are one piece, there is much more to the puzzle of weight management and metabolic health, like hormonal cascades and oxidative stress. My guest today is Dr. Robert Lustig, an author and neuroendocrinologist with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He has dedicated his retirement from clinical medicine to help fix the food supply in any way he can, to reduce human suffering, and to promote a collective vision of metabolic health: protect the liver, feed the gut, support the brain.  In this episode we discuss: Is a calorie really just a calorie? Why are we witnessing such unprecedented rates of mental illness? The answer lies not only in our modern-day, high-paced, stressful environment but at the end of our forks.  In this episode of my Health Bites series, I discuss why our brains are so broken, the root causes driving neuroinflammation, and how this drives disconnection between our prefrontal cortex (the adult in the room) and amygdala (our reactive, child-like brain), causing our anxiety and emotions to take over. We’ll also discuss the research clearly showing how our toxic SAD is a key driver of our mental health crisis and how you can eat (and supplement) your way out of many mental health issues.  This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth and Happy Egg.
