Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing with Dr. Todd LePine

Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing | This episode is sponsored by Sound and Tushy Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms—with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health. Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast. This episode is sponsored by Sound and Tushy. Sound makes delicious bubbly sparkling water mixed with tea, botanicals, and fruit extracts. Right now, Sound is offering 20% off with code HYMAN at drinksound.com/hyman. In this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. LePine discuss: The myth of diagnosis Using conventional lab testing in conjunction with advanced, unconventional lab testing Testing for heavy metal toxicity Testing for gut health beyond standard stool testing Assessing immune health and inflammation markers Using lab testing to get to the root cause of low-energy, fatigue, adrenal and mitochondrial dysfunction Advanced testing for Lyme disease, tick infections, Epstein-Barr virus, and more EMF testing Additional Resources: Find a Functional Medicine Practitioner https://www.ifm.org/find-a-practitioner/ The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life https://www.amazon.com/Disease-Delusion-Conquering-Chronic-Healthier/dp/0062290738

Bonus Episode: Treating High Blood Pressure at the UltraWellness Center

Bonus Episode: Treating High Blood Pressure at the UltraWellness Center

This special bonus episode features Dr. Cindy Geyer from the UltraWellness Center, diving into how functional medicine approaches high blood pressure — and why treating the root cause means looking far beyond salt and stress. In this conversation, Dr. Geyer walks through the case of a woman with longstanding “white coat” hypertension, family history of cognitive decline, and no clear answers from conventional care. By investigating deeper factors like sleep quality, metabolic health, stress hormones, genetics, and gut function, Dr. Geyer shows how a systems-based approach can improve blood pressure, energy, and long-term brain health — often without medication. You’ll learn: • Why blood pressure medications don’t address the real problem • How stress, sleep apnea, and insulin resistance all contribute to hypertension • Why women are often misdiagnosed or overlooked when it comes to vascular risk • How gut health and food sensitivities can directly affect blood pressure • What functional medicine labs reveal that standard workups miss This is part of a limited bonus series spotlighting the work of the UltraWellness Center team, with new episodes dropping monthly on select Fridays. Sharper, Stronger, Smarter: Build a Better Brain at Any Age

Sharper, Stronger, Smarter: Build a Better Brain at Any Age

Not long ago, conditions like Alzheimer’s were rare, but today, nearly one in two people over 80 are diagnosed with it. In contrast, in places like the Amazon, dementia affects only about one in a hundred—highlighting how modern lifestyle plays a major role in brain health. The brain isn’t an isolated organ; it’s deeply influenced by diet, sleep, movement, stress, toxins, and emotional well-being. Many people who once struggled with brain fog, depression, or memory loss have experienced dramatic improvements by healing their bodies—addressing gut health, detoxifying harmful substances, optimizing nutrition, and supporting the brain’s energy systems. With the right tools, including targeted nutrients, lifestyle changes, and even therapies like breathwork or plant medicines, it’s now possible not only to protect the brain from decline but also to enhance clarity, focus, and resilience at any age. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Daniel Amen and Alberto Villoldo, how the body and brain are intimately connected and how we can think and feel better when we address our overall health first. Dr. Daniel Amen is a physician, double board-certified psychiatrist, twelve-time NY Times bestselling author, and founder and CEO of Amen Clinics, with 10 US locations. Dr. Amen is the author of many books including the mega-bestseller Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, as well as The End of Mental Illness, Memory Rescue, Healing ADD, and Your Brain Is Always Listening. In March 2022, Tyndale will publish his new book, You, Happier: The 7 Neuroscience Secrets of Feeling Good Based on Your Brain Type.   Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., is a medical anthropologist, psychologist and shaman, who studied the spiritual practices of the Amazon and the Andes for more than 30 years. While at San Francisco State University, he founded the Biological Self-Regulation Laboratory to study how the mind creates psychosomatic health and disease.  Founder of The Four Winds Society, he instructs individuals throughout the world in the practice of energy medicine. Dr. Villoldo has written numerous bestselling books, including Power Up Your Brain: The Neuroscience of Enlightenment (with David Perlmutter MD), Shaman, Healer, Sage; and WSJ bestseller One Spirit Medicine.   This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Why Chronic Disease is Exploding w/ Daniel Schmachtenberger

Why Chronic Disease is Exploding w/ Daniel Schmachtenberger

I recently sat down with Daniel Schmachtenberger, a strategist and founding voice behind The Consilience Project, to explore the deeper systems fueling today’s chronic disease epidemic. On this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, Daniel shares a powerful perspective on how modern life impacts our health and what it will take to create lasting change. Here’s what we cover: • Why chronic disease today is largely “man-made” and what that actually means • How pollution, industrial systems, and healthcare itself are quietly driving illness • Why medical stats can be misleading and how to think beyond symptom management • What it will take to build a system that prioritizes prevention and real well-being This episode offers a rare lens on the systems shaping our well-being. I hope it sparks new insights and inspires action. The Importance of Weight Training, Protein, and Muscle

The Importance of Weight Training, Protein, and Muscle

Muscle plays a powerful role in keeping us healthy and living longer, but most people start losing it after age 30—and that loss can drive chronic disease and early aging. The good news is that strength training and eating enough protein can help prevent this decline, improve blood sugar control, and reduce the risk of issues like diabetes, dementia, heart disease, and depression. Muscle isn’t just for movement—it acts like an organ, releasing special compounds called myokines that fight inflammation and support everything from brain function to hormone balance. Resistance training also boosts mood, sharpens memory, strengthens immunity, and supports better sex hormone levels as we age. To get the most out of it, aim for strength training two to four times a week, and make sure you're getting enough high-quality protein—especially at your first and last meals of the day. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, why strength training, muscle, and protein intake are vital for a healthy metabolism, hormones, longevity, and much more. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is board certified in family medicine and completed a combined research and clinical fellowship in geriatrics and nutritional sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.  She completed her undergraduate training in nutritional sciences at the University of Illinois. Dr. Lyon is a subject-matter expert and educator in the practical application of protein types and levels for health, performance, aging, and disease prevention. She has continued to receive mentorship from Dr. Donald Layman, Ph.D., over the course of two decades to help bring protein metabolism and nutrition from the bench to the bedside.  This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Anxiety, Autism, Allergies: The Hidden Triggers in Children No One Talks About

Anxiety, Autism, Allergies: The Hidden Triggers in Children No One Talks About

Rates of chronic illness, behavioral disorders, and neurodevelopmental challenges are rising rapidly among children, often tied to underlying gut dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental triggers such as toxins and ultra-processed foods. Conventional treatments frequently overlook these root causes, relying instead on symptom management or medication. Functional approaches emphasize foundational lifestyle changes—clean nutrition, microbiome support, movement, sleep, and stress reduction—as powerful tools to restore health. Children are especially responsive to these changes, often experiencing rapid and dramatic improvements in behavior, mood, and physical symptoms. With education, testing, and family-centered strategies, parents can take simple, effective steps to help their children thrive. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elisa Song, Dr. Suzanne Goh, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham why a root-cause approach is just as important for children, as it is for adults. Dr. Elisa Song, MD is a Stanford-, NYU-, UCSF-trained integrative pediatrician, pediatric functional medicine expert, and mom to 2 thriving children - and she is on a mission to revolutionize the future of children’s health. Dr. Song is the bestselling author of the Healthy Kids Happy Kids: An Integrative Pediatrician’s Guide to Whole Child Resilience. Dr. Song created Healthy Kids Happy Kids as an online holistic pediatric resource to help practitioners and parents bridge the gap between conventional and integrative pediatrics with an evidence-based, pediatrician-backed, mom-approved approach. In her integrative pediatric practice, she’s helped 1000s of kids get to the root causes of their health concerns and empowered parents to help their children thrive by integrating conventional pediatrics with functional medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and essential oils. Dr. Song is chair of A4M’s pediatric education and has lectured around the world at leading integrative and functional medicine conferences and premier parenting events. She has also been featured in hundreds of top podcasts, print and online media outlets, including the Wellness Mama podcast, BloomTV, Forbes, Healthline, MindBodyGreen, National Geographic, PopSugar, Parents, Motherly, Parade, Verywell Health, and New York Post. Dr. Suzanne Goh, co-founder and chief medical officer at Cortica, is a Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Harvard University, University of Oxford, and Harvard Medical School who has spent decades working with autistic children. Her work as a board-certified pediatric behavioral neurologist, behavioral analyst, neuroscience researcher, and author led her to create the Cortica Care Model, an innovative, whole-child approach that combines optimal medical treatment with the most effective strategies for advancing cognition, communication, and behavior. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Head to bioptimizers.com/hyman and use code HYMAN10 to save 10%.
