Why Psychedelics May Be The Future Of PTSD, Addiction, And Depression Treatment

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and LMNT. Compounds that have long been considered recreational drugs by conventional standards are finally being recognized through science as powerful tools for overcoming hard-to-treat health issues like PTSD, depression, addiction, and more. For the right person, psychedelics can provide a sense of peace and hope that helps heal their inner wounds and allows them to live with more freedom. In today’s episode, I talk with Rick Doblin, Alberto Villoldo, and Wade Davis about the ancient healing mechanisms of plant medicine. Rick Doblin, PhD, is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. His professional goals are to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. Medical anthropologist Alberto Villoldo, PhD, is an international bestselling author who has researched the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes for over 25 years. He is the founder of the Four Winds Society, an organization dedicated to the bridging of ancient shamanic traditions with modern medicine and psychology. Wade Davis is a writer, photographer, and filmmaker. Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013, he is currently Professor of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of 23 books, including One River, The Wayfinders, and Into the Silence, and he was the winner of the 2012 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction (formerly the Samuel Johnson Prize), the top nonfiction prize in the English language. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and LMNT. The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto’s Disease with Dr. George Papanicolaou

The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto’s Disease with Dr. George Papanicolaou

The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto’s Disease | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Rupa Health While thyroid disease can occur in various forms, one of the most common is called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid gland and diminishes its ability to create precious hormones—ones that impact every cell of the body. Hashimoto’s is the leading cause of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) in the US, with women at much higher risk, being 7 to 8 times more likely than men to get it. Because of its autoimmune component, people with Hashimoto’s are actually at a higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases as well. The good news is that the right diet and lifestyle choices can work wonders when it comes to treating and healing the thyroid.  In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease. They also delve into common triggers of Hashimoto’s disease, and much more. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Rupa Health. Believe it or not, food can be a powerful tool to improve our mood and brain health; it can actually make us happier. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to eat to boost your mood, the seventeenth principle in his new book, “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World” available now at pegandiet.com The Pegan Diet is Dr. Hyman’s definitive guide to using food as medicine and understanding how food impacts every system of our body. Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California’s EPA Secretary with Jared Blumenfeld

Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California’s EPA Secretary with Jared Blumenfeld

Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California’s EPA Secretary | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeepers Naturals We’re divorced from nature and disconnected from wild places. I think this has really hurt us in multiple ways, some of which we are still figuring out, but especially in the way it’s allowed people to desecrate the land, air, and water we rely on for life. Yet people are so resistant to acknowledging climate change and what needs to be done. This could be because of the doom-and-gloom approach many folks take that can be outright depressing or the overwhelming amount of inputs that cause people to simply shut down. It might also just be hard to wrap our heads around how it’s possible to destroy something as vast as the ocean and sky.  Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m hoping to provide you with a different perspective on climate change revolving around hope and positivity. Yes, we still have a long way to go, but we’re seeing some great initiatives and outcomes in places like California where the climate and environment are deemed worthy investments. My guest today is the perfect person to share about those projects, challenges, and victories. Jared Blumenfeld is California’s Secretary for Environmental Protection. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in January, he is one of America’s most innovative environmental leaders, with more than 25 years of environmental policy and management experience at the local, national and international levels.  This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeepers Naturals. Right now, BiOptimizers is offering my community 10% off their CogniBiotics, a brain and mood-enhancing probiotic that contains specifically chosen strains with a high level of research supporting mental health and performance. You just pay $5 for shipping and if you don't love it they will refund your $5 no questions asked.   Here are more of the details from our interview:  How Jared became interested in environmental issues (7:22) The detrimental effects of our disconnection from nature (10:41) Simultaneously holding hope and grief around climate change (15:24) The 50th anniversary of The Clean Air Act (21:12) The importance of legal projections, political will, incentivizing good behavior, and punishing bad behavior (24:15) The unequal effects of climate change (26:13) Taking bold action to address climate change and decarbonizing our economy (31:37) How soil can save the earth (40:58) Supporting farmers through legislative incentives (45:54) How to promote regenerative agricultural practices (54:37) Listen to Jared Blumenfeld’s podcast, Podship Earth at https://www.podshipearth.com/about.

The Pegan Diet: Eat For Gut Health

The Pegan Diet: Eat For Gut Health

The gut microbiome is likely the most important regulator of our overall health. Unfortunately, our modern diet, gut-busting lifestyle, environmental toxins, and other factors all feed the bad bugs in our gut and drive inflammation, which is at the root of almost all chronic diseases and obesity. Sixty percent of our immune system is in our gut, right under a one-cell thin layer of gut lining. When we treat this lining unkindly, we develop a leaky gut, allowing food proteins, microbes, and microbial toxins to “leak” into our bloodstream, triggering our immune system to start fighting the foreign invaders. We call this dysbiosis (as opposed to symbiosis) an imbalanced gut microbiome. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to eat for gut health, the fifteenth principle in his new book, “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World” available now at pegandiet.com The Pegan Diet is Dr. Hyman’s definitive guide to using food as medicine and understanding how food impacts every system of our body. Becoming Nobody: The Key To Freedom And Happiness with Rameshwar Das

Becoming Nobody: The Key To Freedom And Happiness with Rameshwar Das

Becoming Nobody: The Key To Freedom And Happiness | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and Athletic Greens Our higher and lower-self are always around, but who are we listening to most of the time? Who is having the conversation in our heads? Taking a deeper look at my level of awareness led me to study Buddhism in college and though I changed course to pursue a career in medicine, spiritual growth has always remained a passion for me. I think as humans we need a mass recognition that we are all one; we need to see that inside we’re all the same. Learning from others is a key part of the journey to greater awareness and there are so many teachers I’ve found throughout my life that have helped me do that. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy is one of them.  Rameshwar Das has been navigating a spiritual path for 50 years. Ramesh met Ram Dass in 1968 and spent time with Neem Karoli Baba in India from 1970-72. He learned Vipassana meditation from Goenka in India. Ramesh has worked as an artist, photographer, environmentalist, and writer. He has collaborated on many projects with Ram Dass over the years, including the original Be Here Now, and the Love Serve Remember recordings, and is co-author with Ram Dass on three books, Be Love Now, Polishing the Mirror, and Being Ram Dass. This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and Athletic Greens. Paleovalley is offering 15% off your entire first order. Just go to paleovalley.com/hyman to check out all their clean Paleo products and take advantage of this deal. Right now, Joovv is offering Doctor’s Farmacy listeners an exclusive discount on Joovv’s Generation 3.0 devices. Just go to Joovv.com/farmacy and use the code FARMACY. Some exclusions do apply.  Athletic Greens is offering Doctor’s Farmacy listeners a full year supply of their Vitamin D3/K2 Liquid Formula free with your first purchase, plus 5 free travel packs. Here are more of the details from our interview:  The cultural influence of Ram Dass’ book Be Here Now (6:21) Ram Dass’ heart-opening introduction to Maharaji Neem Karoli Baba (9:33) Maharaji Neem Karoli Baba simple teachings to love and serve everybody, including yourself (15:05) Maharaji Neem Karoli Baba’s LSD trips, the surprising lack of effects from the drugs, and what it  implies about the ego and the soul (21:33) Ram Dass’ personal journey and teachings around getting out of the ego (31:00) Becoming Nobody, the documentary about Ram Dass’ life, and the practices that sustained him (33:50) How Ram Dass approached life after his stroke, aging, and death (40:13) The infinite soul and impermanence of life (44:18) Developing a loving awareness of your higher self (56:41) Applying Ram Dass’ teaching and wisdom to today’s world (1:02:37) Get a copy of Being Ram Dass at https://www.amazon.com/Being-Ram-Dass/dp/1683646282/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=being+ram+dass&qid=1611259838&sr=8-1
