Why Psychedelics May Be The Future Of PTSD, Addiction, And Depression Treatment

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and LMNT. Compounds that have long been considered recreational drugs by conventional standards are finally being recognized through science as powerful tools for overcoming hard-to-treat health issues like PTSD, depression, addiction, and more. For the right person, psychedelics can provide a sense of peace and hope that helps heal their inner wounds and allows them to live with more freedom. In today’s episode, I talk with Rick Doblin, Alberto Villoldo, and Wade Davis about the ancient healing mechanisms of plant medicine. Rick Doblin, PhD, is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. His professional goals are to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. Medical anthropologist Alberto Villoldo, PhD, is an international bestselling author who has researched the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes for over 25 years. He is the founder of the Four Winds Society, an organization dedicated to the bridging of ancient shamanic traditions with modern medicine and psychology. Wade Davis is a writer, photographer, and filmmaker. Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013, he is currently Professor of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of 23 books, including One River, The Wayfinders, and Into the Silence, and he was the winner of the 2012 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction (formerly the Samuel Johnson Prize), the top nonfiction prize in the English language. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and LMNT. The Pegan Diet: Leverage Personalized Nutrition For Optimal Health

The Pegan Diet: Leverage Personalized Nutrition For Optimal Health

Food is not just calories or energy; food is information, instructions that upgrade or downgrade your biology with every bite. Think of it like code that programs your software. Your hardware is your genes. Your software is how those genes are turned on or off. Food regulates not only your genes but also your hormones, like insulin, testosterone, estrogen, and thyroid. It alters your brain chemistry, producing happy chemicals, and it can even trigger addictive patterns. So how can you personalize your diet (and nutritional needs) to optimize your health? In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to leverage personalized nutrition for optimal health, the twelfth principle in his new book, “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World” available now at pegandiet.com The Pegan Diet is Dr. Hyman’s definitive guide to using food as medicine and understanding how food impacts every system of our body. It has 21 easy to follow principles for anyone, regardless of where they are on their health journey. It also contains 30 delicious Pegan-approved recipes. Get your copy today!

Why Eliminating Meat From Our Diet Isn’t The Solution To Climate Change with Anya Fernald

Why Eliminating Meat From Our Diet Isn’t The Solution To Climate Change with Anya Fernald

Why Eliminating Meat From Our Diet Isn’t The Solution To Climate Change | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and BLUBlox Human health is dependent on planetary health. A healthy planet coincides with healthy animals; when we look at the way public health and our climate have changed with the industrialization of agriculture, animals are a key focus. We often hear the argument that in order to solve climate change we need to stop eating meat. What these people aren’t realizing is that animal agriculture done right is actually part of the solution. That is a big stipulation because the methods used to raise meat can make or break our climate crisis and our health.  I’m thrilled to sit down today with Anya Fernald to discuss the ins and outs of regenerative farming and animal practices. Anya Fernald is the co-founder and CEO of Belcampo. Belcampo operates 27,000 acres of organic farmland in California and processes its own livestock for sale in its own butcher shops and restaurants. Anya has two decades of leadership and entrepreneurship experience in high-quality, organic and premium foods. Given her expertise on meat and leadership within the meat industry, Anya has been profiled in The New Yorker and The New York Times, and has served as a regular judge on Iron Chef America on The Food Network since 2009. She has been recognized as one of Inc. Magazine’s 100 Female Founders, one of the 40 under 40 by Food & Wine, and was named a Nifty Fifty by The New York Times. (42:44) Why over a third of meat is thrown away in the United States (44:34) Scaling regenerative agriculture (49:09) The top policy recommendations Anya would make to improve agriculture (1:01:25) For a limited time, Belcampo is offering Doctor’s Farmacy listeners a 20% discount for new customers using the code FARMACY20 at belcampo.com (exclusions do apply). Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Betterhelp Rates of autism have skyrocketed over the years, from an estimated 1 child in 5,000 in the 1960s and 1970s to just 1 in 54 kids today. The diagnosis of autism can be shocking and difficult for parents and families which may leave them feeling isolated, alone, helpless, and hopeless, but it doesn’t have to be that way. While we don’t have all the answers, and more research is needed to identify and validate the causes and treatment of autism, there are new signs of hope. And there is no such thing as “autism.” Rather there are “autisms”—different patterns of biological dysfunction unique to each child that result in multiple insults to the brain that all manifest with symptoms we call autism. Like every condition or illness, the key is to dig into the layers and peel the onion to discover what is really happening. It is not usually one thing but a collection of insults, toxins, and deficiencies piled on susceptible genetics that leads to autism. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating children with autism. They also share specific patient stories that they have treated. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Betterhelp. The Pegan Diet: Eat Like A Regenetarian

The Pegan Diet: Eat Like A Regenetarian

Our agriculture system is destructive— for the earth and for human health. The food produced by industrial agriculture leads to at least 11 million deaths a year and drives our obesity epidemic. We need to build a regenerative system—one that regenerates the earth and human health. Regenerative agriculture is more profitable for farmers, produces higher yields, and better-quality food. When we vote with our dollars and our forks by choosing regeneratively grown food, we send a message to Big Food that we want more sustainable farms. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to eat like a regenetarian, the ninth principle in his new book, “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World” out February 23, 2021. Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story | This episode is sponsored by Joovv and AquaTru We live in an environment steeped in chemicals that our bodies were not designed to process. When it comes to toxins one plus one does not equal two. There is a compounded effect. Chronic toxicity can wreak havoc on our health and result in symptoms ranging from fatigue to sleep and skin issues. It can also be related to autoimmune issues, diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, autism, and many other conditions. Unfortunately, conventional medicine rarely examines the role of toxic load when it comes to treating these conditions.  In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to assessing a patient's toxic load and supporting the body to detoxify and reduce high levels of heavy metals. They also share their personal experiences treating patients in this area. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.
