Your Life, Your Career, Your Choice! | Danielle Britt Ep. 115
BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO LIVE THE LIFE OF YOUR DREAMS ACCORDING TO YOUR VISION AND PURPOSE INSTEAD OF THE EXPECTATIONS AND OPINIONS OF OTHERS.” Roy T. Bennett Do me a favor and imagine what your ideal life would look like. What are you doing for a living? What do your mornings look like? How are you spending your time? Who are you spending that time with? Now go one step further and compare that vision to the life you’re living now. How close are the two? If you’re lucky, these two images are the same. If there is a stark difference between these two images, then we have some work to do. Though it’s easy to get discouraged, overwhelmed, and intimidated by the task at hand, I want to empower you and let you know that you do have what it takes to craft the life you truly want. It’s waiting for you on the other side of hard work. Don’t shy away from the challenges that lay before you because when you look back and dust yourself off, I’m sure you will smile, knowing that it was all worth it. My guest today, Danielle Britt is the author of “Your Live. Your Career. Your Choice.” She is a living example of what it looks like to face challenges, overcome adversity and come out on the other end shining brighter than when she started. Her book is a journey of overcoming humble beginnings, enduring hard times, facing rejection, and building mental fortitude. It was a true pleasure having Danielle on the podcast and I am excited to share our conversation with you today. You’re guaranteed to be left inspired and motivated by her story and what she has to say. Write Your Own Story | Ty Washington Ep. 114
“STOP ALLOWING YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIFE TO BE CLOUDED BY BUSY NOTHINGNESS.” Steve Maraboli Where we are in life is a result of the decisions we’ve made over the course of time. In a year when so many intangibles and obstacles have been thrown our way, it’s easy to throw our hands up and relinquish any responsibility or control. I get it… This year is not your fault. But what happens now is your responsibility. Too many of us take what’s given to us day in and day out and never truly focus on the intention behind what we’re doing. This is a recurring theme that we cover on the podcast. Imagine the life we can live when we’re more intentional in our daily actions and focused on the desired outcome. Yes, life will throw you A LOT of curveballs along the way, but if you keep swinging, you might just hit one of them out of the park. The best way to hit that curveball is by tracking it as it comes in. But how can you tack something you typically can’t see coming? My guest today, Ty Washington, would tell you to track that curveball by listening. The clues are all around you. Sometimes you just need to be silent enough to listen. Moving to South Carolina by way of Flint, Michigan, Ty has seen multiple perspectives throughout his life. This dual experience and diversified exposure has led to a very intuitive and insightful viewpoint. Hop into today’s episode and listen as Ty and I discuss the importance of education, learning who you are, and planning for the future. You’ll be sure to recalibrate the direction of your life after this one. Develop Your Own Flavor | Chef John Malik Ep. 113
“IN ORDER TO BE IRREPLACEABLE ONE MUST ALWAYS BE DIFFERENT.” Coco Chanel We all have a natural desire to fit in. At our very core, it’s almost instinctual. When you think about our ancestors, rejection from the herd most likely meant death. Unfortunately, the repercussion of such a sentence is still felt today in our innate desire to be part of the crowd. Ironically, we don’t only want to fit in, we also want to stand out. With these contradictory wants, how can we possibly satisfy the two? I would argue that being part of the crowd is just an illusion of what we actually want. Maybe the thing we truly want is to be accepted. This acceptance is often gained through confidence and embracement of one’s uniqueness. You need to work on your own recipe before serving it to others. My guest today would explain it like this: “YOUR FOOD SHOULD HAVE A VOICE” John Malik John Malik, is a restaurant consultant, writer, marketer, and restaurateur with over 25 years in the Food & Beverage industry. His culinary work has gained the attention of prestigious publications and organizations such as Food Network, Bon Appetit Magazine, Southern Living, Chile Pepper Magazine, and received a nomination from the James Beard Society for Best Chef in the Southeast. A native of New Orleans, Johns journey started in college after breaking the news to his father that he didn’t want to study law. What would follow is a culinary journey that would take John to a number of restaurants through New Orleans, Charleston, SC and finally Greenville, SC as the owner of 33 Liberty. John would find success in a competitive industry by asking himself each night what he can do tomorrow that he didn’t do today. A major shift in his career would come when he decided to no longer follow someone else’s formula and start being true to himself. It’s a lesson we can all learn and adapt to the way we live our lives. Hop into today’s episode and listen to the journey of creation, experimentation, and creativity behind the lives we live and the careers we pursue. There’s definitely a lot of great food talk to be had as well! Living A Life Of Synergy | Cody Childers Ep. 112
SHOW UP AUTHENTICALLY AND SYNERGY WILL MEET YOU THERE.” Sanjo Jendayi If you’re like most people. Coffee is one of the first things on your mind each morning. The aroma, the taste, and ahh yes, that caffeine fix! I know a lot of you reading this know the ritual. It’s sacred and special. In fact, a lot of us would say: “DON’T Y’ALL TO ME UNTIL I’VE HAD MY CUP OF COFFEE!” What is it about this wonderful drink that brings everything together? You don’t need to be a coffee lover to understand the impact it has on so many of us on a daily basis. Maybe that because at its core, coffee is here for you, the person that’s drinking it. Imagine if businesses made us feel like that? I’d argue that some of the best companies in the world have one thing in common. Their focus on their customers. My guest today Cody Childers knows where his true focus is. It’s on you, the customer. As the founder of Synergy Coffee, Cody’s mission is to create space for relationships and unity through coffee. What started out as an idea to fill a void, turned into a full-fledged specialty coffee catering company in Greenville, SC. It’s a journey that’s just getting started but has been born out of awareness, preparation, and a bit of risk. Hop into the origin story and learn how Cody made the decision to take his down payment for a house and use it to start his own company. We cover the true definition of fear, the focus being on the customer, and building a team of people who love their jobs. You’ll want to sip on a nice hot cup of joe to this one. Don’t Just WANDR Through Life | Jinny Oh Ep. 111
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOU ARE… FROM THIS VERY MOMENT ON YOU CHOOSE THE DIRECTION OF YOUR LIFE.” Toni Sorenson A lot of us know what it feels like to be lost in life. We either try a whole bunch of things that have nothing to do with each other or we get paralyzed by the number of options in front of us. What’s worse is once we find something we think we want to pursue, we land in a community of so many others well down the path that are capable of things we can only dream of doing. The gap seems wider than anything we could ever tackle. How can we sift through the garbage and find something that we really want to pursue? Additionally, how can we stay confident and persistent once we’re well on our way and keep from getting discouraged? If I’m being honest, I don’t know the answers to either of those questions. The best way to find your direction is to just start walking. As for the whole getting discouraging thing? Well, I’m not sure if that goes away easily either. My guest today is well on her way and is still learning as she goes. Just speaking with her for a few minutes, you can tell she’s a life long learner and will always look to improve herself and pour into those around her. Jinny Oh is the founder of WANDR, an award-winning product strategy and UX Design firm that’s worked with clients like WWF, Samsung, and The US Air Force. Jinny will tell you that she has felt her fair share of imposter syndrome, uncertainty, and stress. For some of us, it’s just part of the process. As we grow and continue to step foot in those rooms, before you know it, we start to feel like we belong. Just be glad you were invited into the room in the first place! Hop into today’s episode while Jinny and I discuss starting something that matters, taking care of your team, overcoming imposter syndrome, and leaning on consistency and hard work. Put In The Work For The Life You Want | Spencer Ramseur Ep. 110
“A DREAM DOES NOT BECOME REALITY THROUGH MAGIC; IT TAKES SWEAT, DETERMINATION, AND HARD WORK.” Colin Powell I know you’ve heard it before. The life you want to live will take more work than you think. But it’ll be worth it. Unfortunately, most people don’t take this advice seriously and get discouraged when reality sets in. What was the last thing you tried that turned out to be a lot harder than you thought? Did you stick with it? If your answer is yes, I hope the results were everything you’ve ever wanted. However, if the answer was no, I think we need to explore where things went wrong. Don’t get me wrong. It’s okay to change your mind and decide to spend your time on something more fulfilling or more aligned with your long term goals. Take caution though as you don’t want to spend your days dabbling and never actually developing a skill or expertise in one direct niche. The juiciest fruits are typically out of reach from the masses. If you’re wanting to really enjoy the finer things in life, financial freedom, time flexibility, and a life by design, you’re going to have to do what most people aren’t willing to do. You’re going to have to work for it. My guest today, Spencer Ramseur is the youngest guest we’ve had to date on the podcast and he has already put in the work. Starting in the insurance industry at the age of 19, Spencer would face rejection, stress, family struggles, and more on his road to growth. Let me be clear here. Spencer is just getting started! However, after years of knocking on doors, cold calling, and setbacks, he’s just reaching his stride. Hop into today’s episode as Spencer and I discuss working two jobs while training in his craft, learning not to judge, putting in the hours, and seeking proper guidance. You’ll be inspired to lean in just a little bit more into your practice after listening to this one. You Are The Poet Of Your Life | Moody Black Ep. 109
“POETRY … IS THE REVELATION OF A FEELING THAT THE POET BELIEVES TO BE INTERIOR AND PERSONAL WHICH THE READER RECOGNIZES AS HIS OWN.” Salvatore Quasimodo Many of us have experienced the beauty of art. It could be a book, song, poem, or even a painting. For some reason we can’t explain, it just speaks to us. That’s what happens when the emotion within us is articulated through art. We get an instant connection to it. It becomes a part of us and we wonder how the artist was able to capture what we were feeling so well. Often times, it’s because that artist experienced the same emotion and spent the time to reflect, meditate, and unpack it into physical form. That’s what happened to my guest today, Moody Black. In his words, he was a young adolescent when he realized: “POETRY CAN SPEAK TO ME“ Moody Black When was the last time a craft, grabbed your heart? I’m a firm believer that we all need an outlet for our emotions. Whether it be singing, an instrument, poetry, journaling, or simply meditating. If we never slow down and analyze the things that impact us each and every day, we’re bound to crash into a wall of emotion we didn’t see coming and can’t understand. Some would call this “A Meltdown.” Don’t let that happen to you. If art can tell us anything it’s that you are not the only one going through what you’re going through. That might not solve the issue, but there’s something powerful in us realizing that we’re not alone. Hop into today’s episode and listen to Moody and I discuss wearing your passions on your sleeve, applying your unique skills in creative ways, and staying connected and relatable throughout your growth. You’ll learn so much more than how to be a poet of your own life in this one.
