Overcoming Addiction In Your Life | David Murray Ep. 99
AN OVER-INDULGENCE OF ANYTHING, EVEN SOMETHING AS PURE AS WATER, CAN INTOXICATE.” Criss Jami What are some good tips to overcoming addiction in our lives? If we are a slave to our habits, the first step would be to pay closer attention to the things we do on a daily basis. Addiction can come in many forms. Whether it’s drugs, alcohol, pornography, social media, working out, pleasing others, taking risks, or a gambit of other things, none of us are immune. You’ve likely heard it said before that the first step in curing addiction is realizing that there is one. Even further, the second step comes when we decide to no longer serve a specific master and choose a better one. We will always fall onto our habits. The key is to add beneficial and productive habits that will serve us instead of rob us. Doesn’t recovery sound a lot better when it’s put that way? My guest today is one of the greatest guys I know and someone I truly look up to. David Murray‘s journey with addiction is never-ending and he’s ready to take others along with him. “IF THIS CAN HELP JUST ONE PERSON TAKE A STEP TOWARDS RECOVERY, SHARING MY STORY IS WORTH IT.” David Murray Davey helps us debunk a popular perspective in this episode. What many perceive as weakness is actually the strongest thing you can do. Would you call a slave who overcomes his master weak or strong? Join Davey and me as we discuss the terrible hold of addiction and the challenging obstacles we face on the road to recovery. This is one You really should hear. A Story About Work Ethic | Mary “Granny” Witt Ep. 97
“I don’t think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who from an early age knew I was responsible for myself, and I had to make good.” Oprah Winfrey Started from the bottom now we’re here! It’s a phrase made popular by rapper Drake when his song “Started from the bottom” first dropped in 2013. The song glorifies the hustle, the drive and the work it takes to reap the benefits of success. With so many people chanting the phrase and throwing their hands up in celebration, I couldn’t help but wonder. Where is here? You see, most of us don’t know where we’re going so we just settle for where we are. Finding that destination and overall vision can be hard. While some say you need to know where you’re going, I also argue that floating along through life while waiting to find your vision isn’t useful either. Sometimes we just need to take that next step in order to find out where our path actually leads. I can honestly say, regardless of where you are, there is an opportunity to move up or improve your life. The doors are all around us. We just need to open them and do what it takes to get through! My guest today, Marie “Granny” Witt, knows all about finding that next level. Starting from humble beginnings, Granny shares the challenges of walking 8-miles a day to school, taking every opportunity she could to grow, and using her creativity and smarts to get the jobs she wanted. This is a true “No Rain… No Rainbows” story on work ethic, patience, and persistence. Take a listen as Mary “Granny” Witt takes us from childhood to retirement and all the challenges she’s faced along the way. This will be just one of many topics I hope to unpack with Granny. I hope you appreciate the wisdom. If you enjoyed this episode, I encourage you to join our Patreon Page and help us continue to bring you more great content. If you are unable, no worries! It's Time To Fight For Your Life | Joe Buckner Ep. 96
“You will never be entirely comfortable. This is the truth behind the champion – he is always fighting something. To do otherwise is to settle.” Julien Smith How do you want your life to look? If you believe in something or really want something, you tend to fight for it, right? Unfortunately, a lot of us never fully get clear on our vision so we wander aimlessly, looking for a battle to fight. Everything we do can either bring us closer or take us further away from our goals and the life we want to live. Ironically, it's the small choices we make that tend to have the biggest impact. When was the last time you checked in on your trajectory? Do you know where you're going or are you just coasting along? These are the questions we should face and answer before we can truly know where we're going. Get clear on the vision. Focus on the vision. Fight for the vision. My guest today, Joe Buckner is the founder of Beautifully Savage Boxing Studio, Coach, Speaker, and Community Leader. He knows exactly what he's after. Joe believes we need to fight for the life we want and show up as our best selves every day in order to do so. It's no surprise he was able to transform his life and go from being a homeless ex-con to becoming a 6-figure earner and successful entrepreneur. His ambition and energy are sure to infect and "inspire you to aspire to be better." (His words!) Hop into today's episode and join us as we discuss overcoming challenges, the importance of habit, knowing your worth, and staying humble. We cover a lot in this conversation. Honest to Greatness | Peter Kozodoy Ep. 95
“Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters” Albert Einstein How honest are you? It’s a question we probably don’t think about often. Even further, I’m willing to bet your answer might not be in line with the truth. That’s the funny thing about honesty… It’s hard to be truthful with others if we’re not first being truthful with ourselves. Imagine just for a moment, the benefits of living in brutal honesty. Waking up each morning, washing down that “tough pill” with your morning coffee. What advances would you be able to make in your business, relationships, or life? If you were to ask my guest today, he’d tell you honesty is the key. Peter Kozodoy is the author of Honest to Greatness: How Today's Greatest Leaders Use Brutal Honesty to Achieve Massive Success, an Inc. 5000 serial entrepreneur, TEDx speaker, and business coach. Brutal honesty is how Peter rolls. Missing his opportunity to be an Olympic figure skater and attend Harvard University at the age of 18, Peter had to find a new grasp on life. This process would involve painful truths and self-reflection. Brutal honesty would end up being the tool that allowed Peter and his business partner to build an Inc. 5000 marketing agency working with Fortune 500 companies, startups & Warren Buffett. This simple principle, though not so easy, is what Peter applies in his coaching and leadership training to help business owners and entrepreneurs reach their maximum potential. Peter says it’s all about being honest with our community, others, and most importantly ourselves. Take a listen as Peter and I unpack his adventure through business, life, writing the book, and more. We unpack the truth about honesty and get real on what it takes to be successful. You’ll be surprised at just how dis-honest you might be… P.S. Unlock The Creative Within You | Bryan Smith Ep. 94
"Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun." Mary Lou Cook Let's talk about unlocking your creativity. Ask yourself this... What is it that scares you the most? Believe it or not, most people would say public speaking. It's an interesting fear considering there is little physical harm that can come about from doing it. (Compared to fear of heights which actually comes with a certain level of danger.) Why are we so afraid to put ourselves out there? Perhaps it's because public speaking, sharing our writing, or creative work, in general, is a truly vulnerable thing. We are literally sharing what's inside us and hoping that it's well-received. What's scarier than that!? My guest today, Bryan Smith is a trial attorney, musician, writer, and creator of DreamPath Podcast. On his podcast, Bryan explores the artistic journeys of musicians, filmmakers, writers, painters, and creatives of all types. You can imagine the amount of vulnerability his guests share with their audience. Bryan and I sat down to discuss how we could apply the skills of these creatives to the real world and push past our own limiting beliefs and unlock a life worth living. We all have creatives within us. It's just a matter of getting out of our own way. Join Bryan and me as we discuss the origin of fear and why it's so hard to share our work with others. We also explore ways to find our voice as a creative, fully jump into our craft, and finding ways to discover our unique identity. Whether you're a creative or not, there is a ton of value to gain from today's episode. Adjust Your Focus To Learning | Jon Shoer Ep. 93
“FORMAL EDUCATION WILL MAKE YOU A LIVING; SELF-EDUCATION WILL MAKE YOU A FORTUNE.” Jim Rohn There’s a difference between schooling and education. One teaches you how to fit into a system, follow instructions, and do as you’re told. The other teaches you how to be creative, innovative, and think for yourself. Which one would you prefer to be? Even better, which one would you prefer to hire as a manager? I’ll give you a minute to make up your mind… Did you make it? Good! If you’re reading this, I hope you picked thinking for yourself and being innovative. Self-education is extremely important for anyone looking to get to the next level of their career or turn their side hustle/hobby into a stream of income. If you truly want to make a living at what you do or increase your income, you’re going to have to increase your skills. My guest today is a sponge. Jon Shoer is the Experience Manager, Concept Development at The Walt Disney Company. He took a summer trip to LA, absorbed everything he could, and turned an opportunity into an exciting career. What started out as traveling the world filming and taking pictures of celebrities, natives in Haiti, bands, models, and more has turned into a full-time job with Disney. I’ve known Jon since college. We had some great times together and have always dreamed big. I’m personally not surprised one bit by the amazing work he’s been able to create and can’t wait to see what he does next. Hop into today’s episode and listen as we discuss the importance of self-education and teaching ourselves new skills. Jon shares some of his challenges as a photographer, mistakes made along the way, and key steps on how to take your craft from a hobby to a career. You’ll be ready to pick up a camera after this one. Glow Through What You’re Going Through | Katie DePaola Ep. 92
“SOME BEAUTIFUL PATHS CAN’T BE DISCOVERED WITHOUT GETTING LOST.” Erol Ozan I think there’s is a trap that many of us fall into and never see coming. We work hard through school, graduate with a degree, and if we’re lucky, land a job that pays the bills. Some of you may call this life. I call it a trap. I call it a trap because it often locks us into an endless loop that requires more effort and little movement. We work to support a life we barely get to enjoy because of how much we work. The worst is when you realize you’re stuck, and you don’t know how to get out. I think a lot of us can resonate with that feeling. Trust me, I’ve been there. The things you enjoy doing don’t seem to make you much money so you do the things you have to do while sacrificing the things you love. Even further, because we never really commit ourselves to it, we never truly know if we’re missing out on something big. It’s exhausting! The process of finding ourselves and finding our purpose is a long and frustrating journey. Sadly, it’s also why so many of us are hesitant to make that jump. It’s scary to jump into the unknown and blaze a new path. So we stay stuck in the loop of life, waking up and doing it all over again. Here’s the question, though… What if the choice is made for us? What if things got so bad or got to a point where taking action and making a change is the only choice we have? That’s what it took for me to make a change and It’s also what pushed today’s guest, Katie DePaola, to not only find her purpose but to help thousands of other women find theirs as well. Going through treatment for Lyme Disease and losing her younger brother to an accidental overdose are just two examples of the countless challenges Katie had to overcome while building her company, Inner Glow Circle from nothing to a million-dollar business. Her story of grit, tenacity, and persistence is sure to encourage our female and male listeners alike. You’ll hear her insights on how to pay attention to the breadcrumbs of your life while searching for your purpose, how to “glow through what you’re going through”(Love that), and how to find the abundance of miracles that are hidden all around us. Katie also shares the perfect analogy of what it’s like to emerge from your storm when she recalls seeing her first ray of sunshine during her dark times: “THERE WERE NONE AND THEN THERE WAS SO MANY.” Katie DePaola, when referring to her rainbows. Hop into this truly “No Rain… No Rainbows” story as Katie takes us from when she felt like she was living someone else’s life to now gaining “Solidity of Self.” (a phrase she coins in this episode) You’re sure to be inspired.
