What Nolan Wells' Most-Watched Video Really Caught

Calling the Nolan Wells investigation a blackout runs into an inconvenient problem: a blackout produces nothing, and this case has produced a paper trail anybody can go read. That is where this episode starts, and it is not where most of the coverage has been willing to go.

Nolan Xavier Wells, eighteen, rode out to Horn Island on the Fourth of July with friends and did not come back with them. A park ranger found him in the water on the morning of July 6. In the time since, a belief has hardened that facts are being deliberately kept from the public.

So we test it. The dispatch audio from the boat exists because a news organization filed a records request. The vessel's tracking data exists because another one did. A state agency report exists for the same reason. Investigators publicly asked the crowd from that day to send in unedited footage, which is a strange thing to request if the goal is a quiet burial.

Meanwhile the people a cover-up would need silent have been doing interviews with national outlets.

We also handle the thread almost everyone has left dangling, which is the judge whose son was on that boat, and what a chancery court in Mississippi actually has jurisdiction over. The answer defuses one complaint entirely and leaves a different one standing.

Then there is the state autopsy, the statute governing who gets a copy, and the reason the district attorney gave for sealing it, which is weakest exactly where she is leaning on it hardest.

And the video everybody thinks they understand, and the measurement that takes it apart.
