The Softening: Let Your Golden Light Do the Work

The Softening: Let Your Golden Light Do the Work

Hey there, I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you've carved out this time for yourself today. Life's been moving at a clip, hasn't it? It's September, the seasons are shifting, and that restless energy of late summer mixed with new beginnings can leave us feeling a little scattered. So today, we're going to do something deliciously simple. We're going to practice what I call the Softening—a way to help your nervous system remember that it's safe to let go, even just for a few minutes. Find yourself somewhere comfortable. This could be your couch, your bed, or even a chair at your kitchen table. The location matters less than your intention. Once you're settled, let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Feel that? That's already the beginning of relaxation. Now, take a moment and notice three things around you. Maybe it's the quality of light coming through a window, the texture of fabric beneath your fingers, or the hum of life happening outside. Just notice. You're not fixing anything or going anywhere. You're simply here. Let's start with your breath. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, and as you exhale through your mouth, imagine you're letting out a sigh. Not the frustrated kind—the relieved kind, like you've been holding something and you're finally setting it down. Do this three times. Feel how your body shifts, even slightly. Now for our main practice. I want you to imagine your body as a landscape. Your shoulders might be mountains holding tension. Your jaw might be a tight valley. Your stomach might feel like hard earth. As you breathe, imagine a warm, golden light moving through this landscape like sunrise. With each exhale, picture that golden light softening everything it touches. Your mountains become rolling hills. That tight valley opens and relaxes. That hard earth becomes fertile and loose. There's no rush here. This light moves at its own pace, and you're just watching it work. If your mind wanders, that's not failure—that's just what minds do. Gently notice the thought, and bring your attention back to that beautiful golden light. Keep breathing. Keep softening. As we begin to close, take one more deep breath and notice how your body feels different than when we started. There's a quality of ease here. This feeling? You can access it anytime today. When you're in the checkout line or sitting in traffic, you can return to this softening. Just one conscious breath, one moment of imagining that light. That's enough. Thank you so much for practicing relaxation with me today. If this resonated with you, please subscribe so we can explore more ways to bring peace into your life. You've got this.
